143 State Street
From blight to bright: 143 State Street transforms a vacant gas station into new homes, neighborhood retail, and a greener, safer corridor for Teaneck.
Serving as Township Planner in Teaneck, Topology drafted the plan for a five-story, 41-unit building that combines affordable and market-rate housing with ground-floor retail, a 50-space parking garage, 4,700 SF of rooftop amenity space, and 2,200 SF of green infrastructure.
The plan delivers clear community benefits by activating a key intersection along State Street with new retail, street trees, and an engaging pedestrian environment, while improving traffic circulation and safety through better curb cut placement at Queen Anne Road and State Street. Upgraded sidewalks enhance walkability and accessibility, and the building’s design is intended to complement the surrounding neighborhood. In total, the redevelopment replaces a deteriorated site with 41 new homes, including nine affordable units, more than 1,000 SF of commercial space, and sustainable infrastructure that supports a safer, more livable and retail-focused corridor.
